We find that a one-year delay in school entry is associated with a 0.303 decrease in standard deviation of test scores.
This paper examines the effect of school starting age on the academic achievement of junior high school students using the newly available data from the China Education Panel Survey. Regression discontinuity design estimation based on an exogenous entrance cutoff date indicates that a one-year delay is associated with a 0.303 decrease in standard deviations of cognitive scores. However, this negative effect is caused by human capital accumulation prior to primary school entry.

Your child must start full-time education once they reach compulsory school age. This is on 31 December, 31 March or 31 August following their fifth birthday – whichever comes first. If your child’s fifth birthday is on one of those dates then they reach compulsory school age on that date.
If you do not think your child is ready to start school by then, they can start part-way through the year or part time – as long as they are in full-time education by the time they reach ‘compulsory school age’.
Children are required by law to receive full-time education at the start of the school term following their fifth birthday but have the opportunity to start in the reception year in the September following their fourth birthday. Children are normally admitted to the reception year at school in the September following their fourth birthday.

Trying to determine which school grade your child should attend in their new school system is often one of the most challenging aspects of moving into a foreign school system. France, the UK and the US all have their own school grade structures.
Here is a list of school grade equivalents in France vs. the UK and vs. the US for your reference. Please keep in mind though that each child has its own ability and capacity, and a mere school grade equivalent is not always the best deciding factor in where a child will best be suited.
Below, we outline the different grade levels, and years of compulsory education, in Canada. We also compare the Canadian grade level system to that of five other countries—Poland, the United States, Britain, France, and Germany.

Note that at Wolsey Hall we believe that children should study at the level best suited to the point they have reached in their studies, rather than their age. For example if your child is gifted in a particular subject, they may be able to start a Wolsey Hall course a year or so ahead of the school year they would be in had they been in a traditional school setting. Similarly, if your child needs extra support in a subject we may recommend they start a course at a lower level. This will help your child to set securely in place the knowledge and understanding they’ll need to proceed to the next level.

This means that a child who has turned five on or by 1 January in any year must start Prep in that year, or be provided with approved home education.
Every child, from the year after they turn 5 must be enrolled at and attending school, or an approved home education program. Children can also attend Kindergarten from 4 years of age.
In Western Australia, children can start their education in Kindergarten, however compulsory schooling starts the following year in Pre-primary.

Alongside the introduction of a national curriculum in September 2014, the government abolished attainment levels as the main assessment measure in primary schools. Schools have been encouraged to be creative in devising their own assessment procedures.
As part of reforms to the national curriculum, the previous system of ‘levels’ used to report children’s attainment and progress, was removed from September 2014 and will not be replaced. By removing levels, the DFE hopes to allow teachers greater flexibility in the way that they plan and assess pupils’ learning.
Although it is really important that your child has a good rest over the summer so they are ready to come back in September refreshed, it is useful to spend a little bit of time each week practising reading skills and promoting a love of reading. This will really help them to be ready for when we return.

Technology is at a stage where it has infiltrated the education system with the potential to enhance teaching and learning. In Northern Ireland a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) infrastructure is in place. However, statistics and government reports suggest that VLE use amongst the primary school sector is quite limited. In an attempt to redress the limited use of VLEs in the primary school sector this research investigates the potential of serious games and how they may compliment the National Curriculum with the development of AmbiLearn, an enhanced learning environment with a content neutral game-based approach and content creation and reporting modules. This paper presents the design and implementation of AmbiLearn. Preliminary analysis of data from evaluation of AmbiLearn shows promising results and directions for future work are discussed.
